While
living in Berkeley enrolled at the California
College of Arts & Crafts in 1972, Debra Shepard
pondered the idea of creating an altogether
different style of earring.
“I was convinced earrings could be designed without
post backings in a way that would make them lighter
and more comfortable,” Debra said. “But I also
wanted earrings that would inspire a sense of playfulness
and fun.”
Debra attached a thin strand of Sterling Silver
chain to the end of an earring post. She threaded
the post and chain through three piercings in her
right ear. She was delighted with the results. Her
earrings were so comfortable, they felt almost
weightless. Not surprisingly, Debra realized she
might be on to something.
Time permitting; she would work on a few new
designs. However, Debra’s plans soon took a backseat
to an increasingly demanding schedule as she made
the transition from art student to art director. Over
the coming decade, Debra would use her talents
designing imprinted sportswear, corporate logos and
producing t-shirts, hats and jackets for rock ‘n’
roll headliners embarking on world tours.
Fast-forward 17 years later to 2002: Debra and her
then twelve-year-old daughter, Samantha, were
rummaging through Debra’s jewelry box. Out came the
threader earrings. Debra explained how they work.
Samantha wanted to see them on her Mom’s ears.
Although they didn’t know it at the time, Debra and
her daughter had just set the stage for what would
soon become one of the biggest fashion trends to
sweep the nation since chandelier earrings. |

Jingle Ball, and the Independent Spirit Film Awards
to name only a few.
Debra believes there’s more to running a business
than just adding to the bottom line. To aid in
Hurricane Katrina Relief, Debra designed a pair of
Hope, Faith & Charity earrings, which benefited the
American Red Cross for over a year. Presently, the
Hope, Faith, & Charity Collection is raising money
for the
Elton John AIDS Foundation.
For Debra, the success of her company is a dream
come true.
“What could possibly be better than to combine the
daily routine of work with what I love to do,” Debra
asked. “If you can find your passion in your work,
then every day becomes a new adventure.”
